News with the Bible (https://news.withthebible.com, including its English pages under /en/) processes the information needed for signing in to comment and for running the site.
What we store
When you sign in with a Google account, we store the following in a Cloudflare D1 database:
- your name, the address of your profile picture, and a hashed value of your Google account identifier
- when your account was created and when you last signed in, and whether you are an editor or restricted from commenting
- your comments, when they were written, edited or deleted, the page they belong to, and which comment they reply to
We do not store your original Google account identifier. We ask Google for the openid, profile and email permissions. When you sign in, the email Google has verified is compared with the editor allowlist. We do not store your email address in the account database or show it to other visitors. We do not ask for contact or payment details.
When you post a comment, your name, profile picture, comment and the time you wrote it are visible to other visitors. The response that loads comments also includes a hashed identifier that tells commenters apart. We use no advertising or separate visitor-tracking tools. The service runs on Cloudflare, and Worker operational logs are turned on to investigate outages.
Why we use it, and what your browser stores
We use this information to tell commenters apart, show comments and deal with misuse. We do not sell it. Google handles sign-in; Cloudflare serves the site and stores the data.
The editor dashboard stores the topics the editor enters, the sources of the public material checked, drafts, writing settings, review, approval and publishing records, and the history of editorial work. Visitors’ account details and comments are never used as writing material. The token that connects the operator’s computer is stored on the server only as a hash, and it cannot approve or publish a study.
The cookie that keeps you signed in lasts up to 30 days; a temporary cookie that checks a sign-in request lasts up to 10 minutes. Signing out removes the sign-in cookie. Your choice of edition and screen theme is kept in your browser’s localStorage and is not stored with your comment account.
Keeping and deleting
We keep comments and account details while the site is running. When you press Delete next to your own comment, its text and your name and picture are hidden on the public page. The place of a deleted comment remains so that replies still make sense, and this alone does not erase the original text from the database.
